The narrator is spending a day off with his grandmother, who begins to tell him a story from her youth, about 70 years ago, when she was around 20 years old. Her name was Daw Pyone Pyone, and her father, U Nyan, was a schoolteacher.

U Nyan's family, consisting of his wife, two sons, and two daughters (including Daw Pyone Pyone), moved to Monywa for his job. Because the family was large, they rented a house instead of living in the provided accommodation. Monywa was not as developed as it is today.

One evening, someone called for Ma Wai at the front of the house. U Nyan, who was resting, told Ma Wai to go to the entrance and wait. When U Nyan's wife went to serve tea to the guest, no one was there. Everyone was puzzled. That night, the family heard loud footsteps running around the house. Pyone Pyone and her siblings were terrified and gathered in one room.
The Spirit's Revelation [3:40]
U Nyan recited Buddhist prayers, which temporarily quieted the disturbance. Then, the spirit possessed Ma Wai, who began speaking in a strange voice. They called the spirit medium, who confronted the spirit. The spirit revealed that it had been living on the land for a long time and was angered by the new occupants. It claimed that U Nyan had allowed it entry by answering the door. The spirit medium negotiated with the spirit, offering it a place on the edge of the compound.
