Swami Sharnanandji

TLDR;

This video by Sanatan Gyan discusses the importance of purifying the mind (chitta) to achieve a state of freedom from राग (attachment) and द्वेष (aversion). It emphasizes that a pure mind leads to कर्तव्य परायणता (duty-mindedness), निर्भयता (fearlessness), and a state of bliss independent of external factors. The video also highlights the role of विवेक (discernment), सर्वात्मक प्रेम (universal love), and the स्मृति (remembrance) of the infinite in achieving चित्त शुद्धि (purification of the mind).

  • Purifying the mind eliminates राग (attachment) and द्वेष (aversion).
  • A pure mind leads to duty-mindedness and fearlessness.
  • True happiness comes from within, not from external sources.
  • Universal love and remembrance of the infinite are key to चित्त शुद्धि.

The video begins by stating that when one considers everyone as their own, द्वेष (aversion) disappears. Conversely, when one does not consider any object as their own, राग (attachment) is destroyed. This state of being free from राग and द्वेष leads to the automatic purification of the चित्त (mind). A person free from राग and द्वेष naturally becomes duty-minded, leading to fearlessness.

The speaker quotes Swami Sharananand Ji Maharaj, stating that when a person's happiness depends on others, their चित्त becomes impure, leading to the emergence of many faults. When the चित्त is purified, all faults are automatically removed. Therefore, चित्त शुद्धि (purification of the mind) is a present-life endeavor and should not be postponed to the future. Every साधक (spiritual seeker) is always free to purify their चित्त, as human life is meant for this purpose.

Making mistakes is not predetermined by fate nor given by others; mistakes are self-created flaws. The responsibility to remove these flaws lies with oneself, which is possible when the साधक does not misuse their capabilities but is always ready to use them properly. The ability to perform साधना (spiritual practice) is naturally available to the साधक. Therefore, being disappointed with साधना is disrespecting the natural order.

A person can purify their चित्त in every situation because all situations are साधन सामग्री (tools for spiritual practice) according to natural justice. There is no पराधीनता (dependence), असमर्थता (inability), or असफलता (failure) in साधना. Every साधक is always independent and capable of performing साधना in every condition. One does not need to know what they do not know or do what they cannot do.

The video describes that upon realizing what one can do and acting accordingly, the attachment to doing (कर्ता) is removed. This ensures everyone's rights are protected, leading to goodwill from all and spontaneous affection. The रस (essence) of receiving स्नेह (affection) is indescribable and सर्वोत्कृष्ट (supreme). In स्नेह, the आदान प्रदान (give and take) is only of स्नेह itself. Giving स्नेह does not diminish it, and receiving it does not satiate; the more given and received, the less it seems.

As the attachment to doing (करने का राग) is removed, the interest in भोग (enjoyment) automatically disappears because the one who does is the one who enjoys. With the नाश (destruction) of the attachment to doing, one becomes a जिज्ञासु (seeker) and a प्रेमी (lover). This leads to the fulfillment of जिज्ञासा (curiosity) and the प्राप्ति (attainment) of प्रेम (love). In the fulfillment of जिज्ञासा, there is नित्य जीवन (eternal life), and in the प्राप्ति of प्रेम, there is अगाध अनंत रस (unfathomable infinite essence).

A साधक who expects सुख (happiness) in return for कर्तव्य (duty) can never purify their चित्त because the महत्व (importance) of कर्तव्य lies in protecting the rights of others and sacrificing one's own rights. साधना is about giving, not receiving. Therefore, there is always सफलता (success) in साधना. One who expects to receive anything from anyone is not a साधक but a भोगी (enjoyer).

Assessing one's महत्व (importance) based on circumstances or considering oneself दीन हीन (poor and inferior) is disrespecting natural justice. No one is truly ऊंचा (high) or नीचा (low) because of any circumstance. The साधक who uses circumstances properly is ऊंचा, and the one who misuses them is नीचा. Giving आदर (respect) or अनादर (disrespect) based on circumstances alone is living बुद्धि (intellect) in जड़ता (inertia), which will make the चित्त impure.

Every वस्तु (object) is अभिन्न (inseparable) from the entire विश्व (universe) in स्वरूप (essence). However, based on बाह्य इंद्रिय ज्ञान (external sensory knowledge) or काल्पनिक भेद (imaginary differences), we मान बैठे (assume) भिन्नता (difference) in that अभिन्न. This results in a lack of स्नेह (affection), leading to actions that should not be done and vice versa, causing संघर्ष (conflict) and वैर भाव (enmity), which makes the चित्त impure.

A प्राणी (being) bound in राग (attachment) and द्वेष (aversion) cannot embrace त्याग (renunciation) and प्रेम (love). Without त्याग, there is no चचेर शांति (true peace), and without प्रेम, there is no अगाध अनंत रस (unfathomable infinite essence). Without शांति (peace), there is no सामर्थ्य (capability), and without सामर्थ्य, there is no स्वाधीनता (independence), and without स्वाधीनता, life itself is not possible. Therefore, the विकास (development) of a प्राणी is not possible when the चित्त is impure.

When the चित्त remains impure, there is no स्थिरता (stability) in the चित्त, nor is there an अभिव्यक्ति (expression) of शांति (peace) and सामर्थ्य (capability). Duty-mindedness lies in the सदुपयोग (proper use) of सामर्थ्य. Upon being कर्तव्य निष्ट (duty-minded), the पूर्ति (fulfillment) of आवश्यक संकल्प (necessary resolutions) and the निवृत्ति (cessation) of अना आवश्यक संकल्प (unnecessary resolutions) happen automatically. This brings स्थिरता to the चित्त, and भौतिक विकास (material development) also happens automatically.

Even with भिन्नता (differences) in कर्म (actions) and मान्यता (beliefs), if there is एकता (unity) of प्रीति (love) towards all, the चित्त can be शुद्ध (pure). Or, if there is असंगत (detachment) from the शरीर (body) and other वस्तुओं (objects), the चित्त can be शुद्ध. However, accepting एकता with some and भेद (difference) with others will not purify the चित्त. The reality is that either the entire सृष्टि (creation) is एक (one), or none of the शरीर and other वस्तुओं are one's own.

Considering सभी (everyone) as अपना (one's own) eliminates द्वेष (aversion), and not considering any वस्तु (object) as अपना destroys राग (attachment). Being रहित (free) from राग and द्वेष automatically शुद्ध (purifies) the चित्त. A प्राणी (being) रहित from राग and द्वेष automatically becomes कर्तव्य परायण (duty-minded), leading to निर्भय (fearlessness).

With विवेक (discernment), a प्राणी (being) can तोड़ (break) संबंध (ties) with all वस्तुओं (objects), including the देह (body). As संबंध with वस्तुओं टूटते (breaks), निर्लों (non-attachment) automatically आने लगते (begins to come), and the चित्त शुद्ध (purifies). With मोह (delusion) मिट जाती (disappearing), निसंदेह (without doubt), तत्व ज्ञान (knowledge of the essence) स्वतः (automatically) हो जाता (happens).

As the प्रभाव (influence) of इंद्रिय ज्ञान (sensory knowledge) मिटते (disappears), the दर्शन (vision) of एकता (unity) in अनेकता (diversity) begins to happen. As the प्रभाव of बुद्धि ज्ञान (intellectual knowledge) मिटते, the बोध (awareness) of समता (equality) in विषमता (inequality) happens. In other words, with वास्तविक ज्ञान (real knowledge), भोग (enjoyment) योग (union), अकर्वेंट (non-doing), and निसंदेह (without doubt) become आवश्यक अंग (essential parts) of जीवन (life).

As the अखंड स्मृति (unbroken remembrance) of अनंत (the infinite) उदय होते (arises), the अंत (end) of काम (desire) happens, and the चित्त (mind) पुनः (again) सदा के लिए (forever) निर्मल (pure) हो जाता (becomes). The स्मृति (remembrance) of अनंत (the infinite) विस्मृति (forgetfulness) कर देती (causes) of अनंत से भिन्न (different from the infinite). This स्मृति becomes दिव्य (divine), चिन्मय (full of consciousness), प्रीति (love), होकर (becoming), अनंत को रस प्रदान करती (offers essence to the infinite).

Upon प्राप्त (attaining) सर्वात्मक प्रेम (universal love) and अभिन्न (inseparability), the चित्त शुद्ध (purifies). Then, उसकी (one's) प्रसन्नता (happiness) किसी और पर निर्भर नहीं रहती (does not depend on anyone else). Instead, उसकी आवश्यकता सभी को हो जाती है (everyone needs them) because उससे सभी को प्रेम हो जाता है (everyone loves them). In other words, one प्रवेश (enters) the साम्राज्य (empire) of प्रेम (love), where the आदान प्रदान (give and take) is only of प्रेम, which is स्वभाव से ही अभीष्ट (naturally desired) by all.

To प्रवेश (enter) the साम्राज्य (empire) of प्रेम (love), आदर पूर्वक (respectfully) सदुपयोग (properly use) the प्राप्त परिस्थिति (obtained situation) and ना रखना (not keep) आशा (hope) of सुख (happiness) from किसी से (anyone) is अनिवार्य (essential). This is the सुगम उपाय (easy method) of चित्त शुद्धि (purification of the mind).
